There is no known cause of Crohn's disease, however, research has found that it is linked to genetic and environmental factors. Individuals who have siblings afflicted with the disease are 30 times more likely to acquire the disorder.


Crohn's Disease Definition


Crohn's disease is a chronic, inflammatory disorder most usually affecting the gastrointestinal tract. It can constrict the bowel and thus cause bowel obstruction, make abnormal passageway between the bowel and other body parts such as the skin, and result to inflammation without causing strictures or fistulae. Among the parts afflicted with this disorder are the ileum and the large intestine, as well as any part of the digestive system including the mouth and the anus.


Crohn's Disease Diagnosis


Colonoscopy is best used to diagnose the condition because it provides visualization of the colon and identifies the pattern of the disease. Biopsy and radiologic tests may also be conducted.


Crohn's Disease Symptoms and Signs


Most people with Crohn's disease can go on for years without getting diagnosed because of the vague symptoms and due to the depth of tissue involvement.
