Aneurysm Definition
An aneurysm is a localized, balloon-like, blood-filled dilation of any blood vessel, which is caused by a disease or weakening of the vessel wall. An aneurysm usually occurs in arteries located in the brain and in the aorta (heart). The bulge in blood vessels could burst, which could lead to death any time. However, the larger aneurysm becomes, the larger chances it is to burst.
Aneurysm Risk Factors
The risks of aneurysms include blood clotting and rupture. Rupture leads to decrease in blood pressure, lightheadedness and increase in heart rate. The risk of death is high for patients with aneurysms, except for ruptures in the extremities. Risk factors of aneurysm are obesity, diabetes, alcoholism, tobacco smoking, copper deficiency and hypertension. Aneurysms are caused by copper deficiency.
Aneurysm Treatment
The treatments for arterial aneurysms are watchful waiting and control of blood pressure as well as surgical intervention. Recently, new invasive techniques, such as endovascular, is used in treating aneurysms. Brain aneurysms have two treatment options ? endovascular coiling and surgical clipping. For aortic (heart) aneurysms that occur in vessels that supply blood to the head, arms and legs, surgery involves a replacement of the weakened section of the vessel with a graft or an artificial tube. Recently, metallic-covered stent grafts are inserted through the arteries and deployed through the aneurysm.
