Colic Causes

There is still no clear cause what really causes colic. Opinions about the possible causes are plenty such as wrong feeding techniques, allergies, mother's anxiety, immature digestive system and even swallowing of air during feedings.

Colic Definition

Colic is the condition wherein babies seem to cry and fuss a lot despite of the fact that they are perfectly healthy, well-fed and well taken care of; one of the most worrisome and difficult problems in infancy that is very disappointing for parents; usually common in both breast-fed and bottle-fed infants.

Colic Diagnosis

Physical exam will be carried out by the doctor to rule out possible causes, if there is no possible underlying medical condition, the baby will be diagnosed with colic.

Colic Symptoms and Signs

The baby exhibits predictable crying episodes, which usually occurs on the same time of day each day; usually happening in the late afternoon or evening. Intense crying that sometimes seem to be impossible to comfort, resulting to a flushed red face due to continuous crying. Persistent crying usually combined with curled up legs, tensed abdominal muscles, and tightened fists.

Colic Treatment

Though colic has been proven to fade away in time usually when the baby reaches 3 months; there are still some who resort to prescription medicine like Mylicon to manage the condition; however the medication may have some serious side effects.
