Colon Polyps
Colon Polyps Causes
Polyps result from abnormal cell growth.
Colon Polyps Definition
Colon polyps is a clump of cells on the colon lining.
Colon Polyps Diagnosis
Doctors conduct screening methods such as digital rectal exam, fecal occult blood test, flexible sigmoidoscopy, barium enema, colonoscopy, genetic testing, pill camera, and new technologies such as virtual colonoscopy. Theses tests have a key role in detecting polyps before they become cancerous. Note however, that each test has its own benefits and risks.
Colon Polyps Symptoms and Signs
Colon polyps usually do not cause problems so experts only recommend regular screening. Sometimes however, the condition shows signs and symptoms such as rectal bleeding, a change in bowel habits, and abdominal pain.
Colon Polyps Treatment
A pathologist microscopically examines a polyp to determine whether it is cancerous. The polyps are usually discovered and removed during a stool examination. Most polyps are removed during colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy while small polyps are cauterized or burned using an electrical current.
