Enterocolitis Definition

Enterocolitis is the medical term used to describe the inflammation of the small and large intestine. However, this illness is further categorized to be either enteritis (inflammation of the small intestine) or colitis (large intestine). Enterocolitis is a common intestinal disease among children.

Enterocolitis Diagnosis

Enterocolitis can be diagnosed using laparoscopy, as well as other laboratory tests and imaging studies to detect intestinal problems.

Enterocolitis Symptoms and Signs

Among the general symptoms of patients with enterocolitis are pain in the lower abdominal area, fever, chills, weight loss and frequent discomfort after eating. This is due to the perforations that already occurred in the intestines.

Enterocolitis Treatment

Treatment for enterocolitis involves enteral feeding, and correction of electrolyte abnormalities. When the damages become severe, replacement of either intestine is done. Antibiotic treatment is also given to help reduce the perforations.
