Episcleritis is a condition wherein the tissue that connects the sclera and conjuctiva becomes swollen. This is one reason behind red eyes, and it can be an indication of the presence of other diseases such as lupus, arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.

Episcleritis is diagnosed using the slit lamp examination.

The main symptoms of the inflammation are redness of the eyes, discomfort and soreness.

The condition doesn't need treatment. Eye drops meanwhile keep the eye clean and moistened, which is of great help.
