Fascioliasis Causes
The major cause of Fascioliasis is the intake of contaminated water or water plants. Other known risk factors include intake of raw liver from c goats, cows or sheep which are infected.
Fascioliasis Definition
Fascioliasis is defined as a type of infection that is brought about by Trematoda, a certain class of flukes. Otherwise known as Fasciola Gigantica or sheep liver fluke, this condition is present worldwide, specifically in areas where cattle or sheep production is prevalent.
Fascioliasis Diagnosis
There are various medical procedures to help diagnose the disease. Lab tests may include CBC count, serology, erythrocyte sedimentation,test for liver function, stool examination, and others. Imaging studies may be chest radiography, ultrasonography, MRI, CT scanning, or cholangiography. In some cases, bone marrow aspiration may be performed. Method of diagnosis varies from patient to patient.
Fascioliasis Symptoms and Signs
There are varied symptoms of Fascioliasis, some of which are, intermittent fever, abdominal pain, hives, cough, chest pain, malaise, shortness of breath, weight loss, nausea, diarrhea, jaundice, vomiting, or anorexia.
Fascioliasis Treatment
Bithionol is considered to be the most efficient treatment option for this condition. HOwever, Praziquantel is said to be safe as well, although it is not believed to be as effective.
