Fordyce Spots Causes


There might be a generic link as to the cause of Fordyce spots for it is still unknown. Hereditary disorder is the main cause of fordyce's condition in 30-40% cases. The risk factors and the common causes of Fordyce condition include family history, viral infection and the overgrowth of sebaceous glands.


Fordyce Spots Definition


Normal large, superficial sebaceous (oil-producing) glands seen on the moist tissue that lines some organs and body cavities (mucosal surfaces) are called Fordyce spots. Most commonly found at the border of the lips, the inner foreskin and on the head of the penis, the spots are asymptomatic. The lesions are also asymptomatic, but irritation or itching may happen if people treat the bumps inappropriately.


Fordyce Spots Diagnosis


It is through visual inspection that the doctor can diagnose the condition. He or she may also take a biopsy or blood sample if they appear on the genitals from some sexually transmitted diseases that may look like Fordyce's spots.


Fordyce Spots Symptoms and Signs


The signs and symptoms of Fordyce spots include multiple (usually less than 10) 1-2 mm, painless, yellowish papules that are seen. Its (Fordyce spots) common location is at the border of the lips, especially near the corners of the mouth. Other locations include inside the mouth, including the tonsils and the back portions of the inner cheeks.


Fordyce Spots Treatment


Treatment is not needed for Fordyce spots. But if irritation is noted, mild topical steroids may provide relief but should be used with caution.
