The disease is caused by the Burkolderia mallei bacterium.
Glanders Definition
The disease usually infects horses and mules though it can also infect other animals and humans. In laboratory settings, human infection usually happen or from prolong contact with animals that are contaminated.

Glanders Treatment
Because the disease is uncommon antibiotic treatment are limited. For experimental animals, sulfadiazine is used also in humans. The bacteria that cause the disease are sensitive to tetracyclines, ciprofloxacin, streptomycin, novobiocin, gentamicin, imipenem, ceftrazidime, and the sulfonamides.
