Causes of Goldenhar syndrome remain unknown, and it is also doubted that it may have something to do with the mother's actions while pregnant. Accounts of familial patterns are present however, and certain cases suggest that an exposure to dioxin prior to or during pregnancy may have caused the condition. More often than not, Goldenhar syndrome occurs randomly.

Goldenhar syndrome, also known as Oculo-Ariculo-Vertebral syndrome, is a congenital disorder wherein the ear, lip, nose, mandible and soft palate are incompletely developed. The condition usually affects just one side of the face.

Goldenhar syndrome Symptoms and Signs
Symptoms include benign growths on the eye, missing eye, partially formed or absent ear, the chin may be closer to the affected ear, and one corner of the mouth is higher than the other. In some cases, internal organs are affected, usually the heart, lungs, and kidneys. The internal organs are either be absent, or have one side that is undeveloped. Other symptoms include hemifacial microsomia, cleft palate and cleft lip, as well as cysts on the eye.

Surgical intervention is the most effective form of treatment for patients of Goldenhar syndrome. Surgery allows the child to normally develop his facial features.
