Granulocytopenia

Granulocytopenia Causes

Granulocytopenia may be caused by genetic congenital abnormalities, autoimmune diseases, toxins, fibrosis of bone marrow, tumors, other infections, aplastic anemia, or certain medications and treatments including chemotherapy.

Granulocytopenia Definition

Granulocytopenia is a condition wherein the body has a decreased amount of granulocytes. Granulocytes are a type of white blood cells containing microscopic granules which are actually small sacs that contain enzymes to digest microorganisms. It is also known by the names Granulopenia and neutropenia.

Granulocytopenia Diagnosis

The doctor will need to know a person's medical history and symptoms prior to making a diagnosis. A physical exam is also mandatory before conducting other diagnostic procedures for the disease including urinalysis to determine any infectious agents, blood test for white blood cell count, genetic exam, and bone marrow tests.

Granulocytopenia Symptoms and Signs

The symptoms of granulocytopenia are not exclusive and may be a result of other diseases. It is best to talk to a physician to make sure and observe the symptoms. They include bacterial pneumonia, bleeding gums, mouth ulcers, low white blood cell count, rapid onset of chills, fever, weakness, jaundice, sore throat, and a higher susceptibility to infections including fungal.

Granulocytopenia Treatment

Treatment options for Granulocytopenia include antiobiotic treatment, leukocyte transfusion, and white blood cell stimulating factors.
