Mitral Valve Regurgitation Causes


Mitral Valve Regurgitation is caused by mitral valve prolapse whereby the mitral valve is weaken, damaged tissue cords that usually anchors the flaps of the mitral valve to the heart wall, rheumatic fever, endocarditis, deterioration of the valve due to aging and untreated high blood pressure and onset of heart attacks.

Mitral valve regurgitation otherwise known as the mitral regurgitation or the mitral insufficiency, or the mitral incompetence, is a medical condition where the heart's mitral valve does not close tightly causing the blood to flow back in the heart causing fatigue and shortness of breathing.

Diagnosis includes undergoing echocardiogram, chest x-ray, electrocardiogram or the ECG, Holter Monitor, cardiac catheterization and transesophageal echocardiogram.

Symptoms includes fatigue, lightheadedness, shortness in breathing, coughing particularly when lying down, feet and ankles that are swelling, palpitations, heart murmur and excessive urination.

Treatment includes monitoring and administration of medication that are used to relieve the body especially the lungs and the legs of body fluids like diuretics. Surgery may be advised by doctors to replace the mitral valve.
