Myelomeningocele Definition
Myelomeningocele otherwise known as the Spina Bifida is a birth defect that is often called the neural tube defect which is caused whenever the tissue found in the spinal cord of a fetus does not close orderly resulting in to a defect in the spinal cord and the backbone of the infant.

Diagnosis includes prenatal screening test, blood tests, ultrasound and amnicotesis to known the levels of AFT in the blood.
Myelomeningocele Symptoms and Signs
Symptoms includes an open spinal canal which makes the membranes and the spinal cord protrude at birth resulting into a formation of a sac at the back of the infant. Paralysis, problems in the bladder and bowel including seizures are often observed with children having this kind of medical condition.
Myelomeningocele Treatment
Treatment for Myelomeningocele may require surgery in order to minimize infection associated with the condition.
