Oikophobia is created by the unconscious mind as a protective mechanism due to a traumatic experience that has something to do with houses, home environrments, or being in a house. Fear may also be triggered by other events such as movies or seeing the trauma experienced by others.

Oikophobia, which is also known as Domatophobia is the irrational fear of houses, in a home environment, or in a house.

The person is exposed to the stimuli and gauged how he or she manifests the fear. Oikophobic persons have different ways of reacting to stimuli although some only react to direct stimuli while others experience fear most of the time.
