Osteochondroses
Osteochondroses Causes
The exact cause osteochondroses remain unknown. Although several theories have been proposed, none have been fully proven. Some of the factors commonly associated with a number of osteochondroses are: stress and ischemia (low blood supply). Athletic kids may be affected when they overstress their still developing limbs with a repetitive motion, such as in a sport activity.
Osteochondroses Definition
Osteochondroses (singular form: osteochondrosis) pertain to a group of diseases primarily affecting children and adolescents in which necrosis or localized tissue death occurs, often followed by spontaneous regeneration of healthy bone tissue.
Osteochondroses Diagnosis
An initial suspicion of osteochondroses can arise based on the affected patient's physical symptoms. For a more definite diagnosis, X-ray findings usually suffice.
Osteochondroses Symptoms and Signs
The primary symptom of most types of osteochondroses is pain in the affected joint, which intensifies when pressure is applied. In addition, the affected joint may become locked and limited range of motion also occurs.
Osteochondroses Treatment
In most cases, conservative treatment - such as resting the affected area for a period of time - is attempted first. A cast is sometimes recommended to fully immobilize the area and allow it to heal. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessitated, particularly in cases where abnormal bone fragments need to be removed from a joint.
