Osteomyelitis may develop due to the result of a bacterial infection in the bloodstream. This disease is sometimes called sepsis or bacteremia that rapidly spreads to the bone.
Osteomyelitis Definition
Osteomyelitis is a medical condition that is caused by the inflammation or abnormal swelling of bone tissue. This is mainly caused by an infection of an infection. This disease may occur on both adults and children for different reasons.
Osteomyelitis Diagnosis
Diagnosis for this disease include blood tests, complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein. Supplementary testing may also include biopsy, x-ray, CT and CAT scans and MRI.
Osteomyelitis Symptoms and Signs
The symptoms of osteomyelitis greatly vary and may depend on the underlying cause as well as the rate of the spread of infection. Among the most common symptoms include fever, tenderness and pain in the affected area, irritability, redness and swelling and possible limping and stiff back.
Osteomyelitis Treatment
Treatment includes the administration of certain intravenous medications. Oral treatment may also be given. Monitoring the patient's condition is highly important using blood tests and x-ray. For severe cases, surgery may also be required. Depending on the condition of the patient, this can either be managed through an out-patient or patent may be required to be hospitalized for a period of time.
