Paracoccidioidomycosis
Paracoccidioidomycosis Definition
Paracoccidioidomycosis is characterized as an infection primarily caused by the fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. Paracoccidioidomycosis is a type of fungal infection that typically involves the mouth, skin, lymph nodes and throat, although symptoms sometimes appear in the patient's liver, lungs or spleen.
Paracoccidioidomycosis Diagnosis
To diagnose the infection of the said fungus, a doctor typically takes some tissue samples for analysis under a microscope.
Paracoccidioidomycosis Symptoms and Signs
Lymph nodes would become swollen when infected by Paracoccidioides, and may drain pus, although there is little or no sensation of pain. The lymph nodes most frequently infected are those found under the arms and neck. Painful ulcers can possibly form in the mouth. In cases where the lungs are affected, the person may also have cough and difficulty breathing.
Paracoccidioidomycosis Treatment
The efficacy of amphotericin B, sulfonamides, as well as sulfamethoxazol plus trimethoprim, miconazole and ketoconazole was evaluated during the treatment of 500 patients suffering from paracoccidioidomycosis.
