Pilar Cyst Definition
Pilar or trichilemmal cysts are sometimes called wens. These are common fluid-filled cysts growing from the hair follicles on the scalp. These growths are usually smooth and mobile which is filled with keratin. Keratin is a protein component, which is found in the hair, skin, and nails. The cysts are sometimes tender but some are not. It is but rarely that these cysts grow extensively and proliferates.

Pilar cysts are found on the patients scalp. The cysts are smooth, and movable under the scalp's skin and come in a number in a specific area. The cysts may also grow quite large and tender. Thes cysts may also rupture causing an intense redness of the scalp, which can be irritated.

To treat pilar cysts, physicians cut into it and drain the material inside it like the keratin. Oral antibiotics are also prescribed for infected cysts, which occur very rarely. Surgical removal of the cysts is also and option to take.
