Pinta Definition

Pinta is a skin disease caused by infection with a spirochete, Treponema carateum, which is indistinguishable from the organism that causes syphilis.

Pinta Symptoms and Signs

Infected individuals initially have a raised papule, after which an eruption of flat, reddened areas, and then a bluish coloration develops subsequently losing pigmentation.

Pinta Treatment

Public health officials prevent the spread of the disease by tracing contacts and treating those infected with penicillin, tetracycline, or chloramphenicol.
