Pinta is a skin disease caused by infection with a spirochete, Treponema carateum, which is indistinguishable from the organism that causes syphilis.
Pinta Symptoms and Signs
Infected individuals initially have a raised papule, after which an eruption of flat, reddened areas, and then a bluish coloration develops subsequently losing pigmentation.
Pinta Treatment
Public health officials prevent the spread of the disease by tracing contacts and treating those infected with penicillin, tetracycline, or chloramphenicol.
