Polymyalgia Rheumatica

Polymyalgia Rheumatica Causes

The cause of the disorder is unknown. However, it may be associated with an immune system problem that involves genetic and environmental factors. Age may also be a factor since the disorder usually develops people at 50 years old or older.

Polymyalgia Rheumatica Definition

Polymyalgia rheumatica is an inflammatory disorder causing muscle aches and stiffness such as in the neck, shoulders, upper arms, thighs, and hips.

Polymyalgia Rheumatica Diagnosis

Patients are interviewed about their medical history and current symptoms. Doctors diagnose polymyalgia rheumatica only after ruling out other causes since some of the symptoms are similar with those of other conditions. Doctors may also perform tests to determine whether polymyalgia rheumatica is the cause of the patient's symptoms such as the SED rate test and a test, which checks the level of C-reactive protein in the blood.

Polymyalgia Rheumatica Symptoms and Signs

Individuals may suddenly experience moderate to severe aching and stiffness in the muscles of the hips, thighs, shoulders, upper arms, and neck. They may also feel fatigue, anemia, or unintentional weight loss. Others may also feel the symptoms gradually.

Polymyalgia Rheumatica Treatment

Patients with mild polymyalgia rheumatica are prescribed with anti-inflammatory medicine such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Patients who experience extreme pain and discomfort are prescribed with steroids. Medical treatment is done as long as needed. To increase chances of recovery, patients also exercise and eat healthy food in conjunction with their medical treatment. The condition usually disappears on its own after a year or more but the medications and self-care measures can provide relief from symptoms.
