Post-Concussion Syndrome Causes
It is theorized that post-concussion syndrome is caused by structural damage to the brain or disruption of neurotransmitter systems, because of the impact that caused the concussion. It is also believed to be related to psychological factors.
Post-Concussion Syndrome Definition
Post-concussion syndrome is a disorder wherein the symptoms of concussion (a type of mild traumatic brain injury, usually occurring after a blow to the head) remains to be felt for weeks or even months after the impact which caused the concussion.
Post-Concussion Syndrome Diagnosis
There is no single test to prove the presence of a post-concussion syndrome. A brain scan, to determine the cause of the symptoms, MRI scans, and referral to a psychologist or psychiatrist, in appropriate cases, may be done to help arrive at a diagnosis.
Post-Concussion Syndrome Symptoms and Signs
Post-concussion symptoms include dizziness, tension headaches, irritability, fatigue, loss of concentration and memory, insomnia, and noise and light sensitivity.
Post-Concussion Syndrome Treatment
There is no specific treatment for post-concussion syndrome; it is the symptoms that are treated instead, for instance, oral medications for tension headaches, and rehabilitation for symptoms relative to memory.
