pruritus
pruritus Causes
Dry skin causes pruritis when the condition is not accompanied with other obvious skin changes such as a rash. Dry skin is usually caused by environmental factors, which can be wholly or partially controlled by an individual. Such factors may be hot or cold weather with low humidity levels, long-term use of air conditioning or central heating, and too much washing or bathing. Skin disorders, internal diseases, allergies, and drug reactions can also cause the condition.
pruritus Definition
Pruritus is an itchy skin condition that may be the result of rashes or other itchy skin condition.
pruritus Diagnosis
The patient usually undergoes a thorough physical examination. The doctor will also ask about the patient's medical history as well as the start of itching, the factors that made it better or worse, and how the patient takes care of his or her skin. Blood tests may also be conducted if the doctor suspects an underlying medical condition, such as liver disease or iron deficiency anemia.
pruritus Symptoms and Signs
A person with the condition feels an irritating sensation to scratch. It may also be associated with redness; bumps; spots or blisters; dry, cracked skin; and leathery or scaly texture of the skin. The condition may last for long periods and may become very intense.
pruritus Treatment
The condition is treated by identifying and treating the underlying cause. Treatments could include medications, wet dressings, and light therapy. An individual may also use anti-itch products and cool baths to reduce itching and soothe inflamed skin.
