Reflux Esophagitis

Reflux Esophagitis Definition

Reflux esophagitis is a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) characterized by inflammatory changes in the esophageal lining caused by reflux of gastric acid into the esophagus. Esophagitis (also known as Oesophagitis) is a general term for inflammation of the esophagus. When esophagitis is caused by GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), it is known as reflux esophagitis. Reflux esophagitis commonly develops as a consequence of poor functioning of the musculature of the lower esophageal segment, which controls the reflux of the stomach's contents.
