Schmidt Syndrome

Schmidt Syndrome Causes

Schmidt syndrome has not been linked to a specific gene. However, certain genetic risk factors have been identified; in particular, carriers of a certain HLA genotype seem to be predisposed to the disease.

Schmidt Syndrome Definition

Schmidt syndrome is an adrenal defect that commonly occurs with another glandular disorder. Schmidt syndrome is also known as ?autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 2?, a more heterogeneous form of autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome which affects one or more endocrine organs but has also been known to invade other non-endocrine organs. Schmidt syndrome is a more commonly occurring type of autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome.

Schmidt Syndrome Symptoms and Signs

Schmidt syndrome typically manifests with hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus type 1, and Addison's disease. Less common manifestations include vitiligo and hypogonadism.
