Sickle cell anemia is a serious blood disorder wherein the red blood cells can assume the shape of the letter ?C? (sickle-shaped). Normal red blood cells are smooth and shaped like a doughnut. Sickle cell anemia is a chronic and life-long condition most sufferers are often well but with a shortened life expectancy and risk for various complications and periodic attacks of pain related to the disorder.

Hemoglobin electrophoresis is a special blood test that doctors use to observe and distinguish the movement of the hemoglobin. It is often used to diagnose older children and adults.
Sickle Cell Anemia Symptoms and Signs
Persons with sickle cell anemia experiences bouts of severe pain in any part of the body like chest, stomach or legs. This is experienced because the sickle cells block the blood flowing in these areas of the body. Other symptoms include feeling of tiredness or fatigue and difficulty in fighting infections. Delay in growth development is also observed I n some patients with Sickle cell anemia. When a person with sickle cell anemia acquires acute chest syndrome; severe chest and abdominal pain, breathing difficulties, fever and cough is usually present.
Sickle Cell Anemia Treatment
Most cases of sickle cell anemia have no cure. Treatments are usually aimed at relieving the symptoms and complications that may arise as the disease progresses. However, some regard bone marrow transplants as effective treatment option.
