Stammering
Stammering Causes
The exact cause of the condition is unknown. But it may be inherited genetically. Other factors may include language development and signal difficulties.
Stammering Definition
Stammering or stuttering is a disorder that results in repeating or prolonging a word, syllable or phrase, or stopping during speech and making no sound for certain syllables.
Stammering Diagnosis
The doctor evaluates the condition by asking about the child's health history. He or she may suggest an evaluation from a speech-language therapist to assess the child's overall speech and language abilities.
Stammering Symptoms and Signs
Affected individuals have difficulty starting a word, sentence or phrase and repeat a sound, syllable, or word. These may be accompanied by rapid eye blinks, tremors of the lips or jaw, and tension, tightness or movement of the face or upper body.
Stammering Treatment
The condition cannot be cured but it is usually outgrown by most children. If it last until the child is beyond 5 years old, speech therapy may be used to decrease stuttering.
