Staphylococcal infection, commonly known as Staph, is a medical condition resulting from exposure to the staph bacteria, which causes infection of various tissues of the body, or the production of harmful toxins, which may in turn, cause a number of diseases
Staphylococcal Infection Diagnosis
Staphylococcal infections affecting the skin are usually diagnosed by mere physical observation, without the need for laboratory testing. More severe infections however, such as infection of the bloodstream, and endocarditis require blood or other fluid culture. Laboratory testing confirms the diagnosis.
Staphylococcal Infection Symptoms and Signs
Staphylococcal infection of the skin usually has the following symptoms: the presence of pus, known as an abscess or boil, redness, swelling and pain on the affected. When the staph bacteria enters the blood stream, it may cause the following: pneumonia, osteomyelitis, and poisoning, among others.
Staphylococcal Infection Treatment
Since it is a bacterial infection, the main treatment is antibiotics. The skin infections caused staph are treated with an antibiotic ointment or in some cases, oral antibiotics. More severe infections are treated with intravenous antibiotics.
