Steatocystoma Multiplex Definition
Steatocystoma multiplex is a congenital inherited medical condition resulting to the presence of multiple cysts on the body usually on the chest but may also present in the upper arms or face. There are also reported cases of presence of cysts in the entire body.

Diagnosis is based on the appearance of the cysts.
Steatocystoma Multiplex Symptoms and Signs
Clinical feature manifests as cysts usually two to twenty millimeters in diameter; but there can be cases where they tend to be several centimeters in diameter. Texture may range from soft to firm with an oily yellow fluid inside, which is called sebum. In some cases, hair may be present within the cysts. Inflammation is possible and may leave scar similar to acne nodules when healed.
Steatocystoma Multiplex Treatment
Surgical removal can be carried out on individual cysts. Excision is done to extract the cyst and its content through the opening created on the skin. In cases where inflammation is observed, oral antibiotics are proven effective to relieve the signs of inflammation. Another option is to prescribe a drug called oral isotretinoin to facilitate temporary shrinkage of the cyst and also to reduce swelling. Excision biopsy can be carried out in cases where cysts are tethered to the underlying skin.
