Sunburn is caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet light.

Sunburn Definition

Sunburn is a condition in which the skin becomes red, painful skin that feels hot to the touch resulting from intense sun exposure.

Sunburn Diagnosis

Patients should see a doctor when their sunburn is too severe with blisters in a large area of the skin as well as signs & symptoms of an infection. Severe sunburn may also be accompanied with high fever, extreme pain, confusion, vomiting, or diarrhea. Medications should be applied whenever sunburn does not respond to home treatment in a few days.

Sunburn Symptoms and Signs

Sunburned skin usually appears pink or red and feels hot or warm when touched, and painful. If it covers a large area, the person may feel headache, fever, and fatigue. Small fluid-filled blisters may also appear. The severity will be know after a day or more.

Sunburn Treatment

Severe sunburn can be treated with doctor prescribed medication such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication to relieve inflammation, pain, and swelling as soon as the symptoms appear. Corticosteroid medication to speed up the healing process and reduce pain and swelling but is not recommended for severe sunburns because it increases the risk of infection. Individuals with sunburn may also apply cool compress and aloe vera lotion.
