Syndrome x
Syndrome x Causes
When the body's tissues do not respond normally to insulin, insulin levels become elevated in the body's attempt to overcome the resistance to insulin. The elevated insulin levels result, directly or indirectly, to the other metabolic abnormalities seen in these patients.
Syndrome x Definition
Syndrom x (also known as Metabolic syndrome) is a combination of medical disorders that increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It affects a great number of people, and prevalence increases with age.
Syndrome x Diagnosis
Syndrome X is a diagnosis of exclusion and will typically necessitate both a clinical diagnosis, appropriate stress testing, and a coronary angiogram that meet the above criteria.
Syndrome x Symptoms and Signs
Symptoms of Syndrome x include: fasting hyperglycemia ? diabetes mellitus type 2 or impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, or insulin resistance; high blood pressure; central obesity (also known as visceral, male-pattern or apple-shaped adiposity), overweight with fat deposits mainly around the waist; decreased HDL cholesterol; and elevated triglycerides.
Syndrome x Treatment
While there is no drug treatment that directly reverses the insulin resistance that causes syndrome X, there is a way to reverse the insulin resistance - diet and exercise. Patients should make every attempt to decrease their body weight to within 20% of the "ideal" body weight calculated for age and height.
