Transient Global Amnesia

Transient Global Amnesia Causes

It is still unclear which exact mechanism produces TGA. A current hypothesis says that it may be due to venous congestion of the brain that leads to ischemia of structures involved with memory, such as the hippocampus. The event may be triggered by performing a Valsalva maneuver in the context of several sudden events such as immersion in cold water, sexual activity, severe emotional stress and forceful exertion.

Transient Global Amnesia Definition

Also known as TGA, this disease is an anxiety-producing temporary loss of short-term memory. Patients typically will not remember events for the past few hours and not be able to retain new information for more than a few minutes.

Transient Global Amnesia Diagnosis

A clear-cut anterograde amnesia must be present during an attack or episode in diagnosing TGA. There should also be no features if epilepsy and patient should not have any recent head injury or active epilepsy during the attack. Tests include a formal psychometric testing as well as a neuropsychological evaluation.

Transient Global Amnesia Symptoms and Signs

The inability to assimilate certain, generally current or recent details is produced by TGA. Social skills and memories of distant past events meanwhile are maintained.

Transient Global Amnesia Treatment

One TGA is diagnosed; a follow-up with a neurologist is required. Activities that could produce an unusual increase in inthrathoracic pressure should also be avoided.
