Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis Causes

The parasite Trichomonas vaginalis causes the disease and is only transmitted through penis-to-vagina intercourse or vulva-to-vulva contact with an infected partner. The parasite cannot survive in the mouth or rectum.

Trichomoniasis Definition

Sometimes referred to as ?trich,? Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by the single-celled protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Trich is primarily an infection of the genitourinary tract. The disease is most common among women and uncircumcised men.

Trichomoniasis Diagnosis

A pap smear may detect the presence of the organism. Pelvic examinations reveal red blotches on the vaginal wall or cervix and a wet prep or a microscopic examination of discharge will also show the infection-causing organisms in the vaginal fluids.

Trichomoniasis Symptoms and Signs

Among women, the symptoms include discomfort during intercourse, vaginal itching, greenish-yellow, frothy or foamy, vaginal discharge with a foul or strong smell, labial swelling or vulvar itching, and itching of the inner thighs. For men, burning after urination or ejaculation, itching of urethra and slight discharge from urethra are among the symptoms.

Trichomoniasis Treatment

The infection can be cured using the antibiotic metronidazole. Patients are advised not to drink any alcohol for 48 hours while taking the medicine since it can cause severe nausea and vomiting. Sexual intercourse should also be avoided until treatment is completed. Even if they have no symptoms, sexual partners should also undergo treatment.
